General

The Dendrological Garden was founded in 1974 on the property of the Dendrological Society’s former gardens and adjacent areas.  The main purpose of the Garden is the study of gene pools of native and alien (non-native) woody species, especially regarding their use in horticulture and landscape architecture.  The garden’s name stems from Greek (dendros = trees, logos = study of).  In contrast to an arboretum – a collection of specimen trees in the systematic sense (arbor = tree), where everything is subject to the ecological requirements of trees, the Dendrological Garden shows the use of various tree species in garden and landscape architecture.

The Dendrological Garden has been open to the wider public since 1991.
